Unique style
Charred wood—also known as Shou Sugi Ban or Yakisugi—has been used in Japan for centuries to make wood last longer. The surface is lightly burned to create a natural layer of carbon that protects the wood underneath. In addition to bringing out the natural beauty of the natural wood, that charred layer makes it highly resistant to rot, insects, mold, sun damage, and even fire.
The charring process doesn’t damage the wood; it just toughens it up. The carbon layer acts like a natural shield: it repels water, keeps bugs away (no chemicals needed), and protects against sun fading. So unlike untreated wood that grays or breaks down over time, charred wood stays strong, dark, and beautiful for years. Combining this method with more western style staining and sealing is what gives our work a unique design in every project we make.
